CANC2: Action in Newman, August 14

Action for the group, but also for me. I rang Ken from Karratha or so to ask for new seat covers as the original ones ripped. They were crap, basically. And in Newman there were brand new bright blue ones waiting for me at the post office. Yippee! I also dropped my camera in Karajini, which burst the back cover open and wrecked that film. I wound it back and hoped for the best, it was Kodakrome so I've already paid for processing, might as well see what comes out. The bugger is that after that the shutter has developed a tendency to jam when I'm winding on. So I ring Perth and buy a new one to be delivered overnight. New as in brand new second hand, same make and model as the one I have (Canon AE1-Program) so I can still use my zoom lens on it.

The action is another ride around the town thing, which again passes without comment or apparent notice from the citizens. We do a stall in the mall, which has a little more success. But Haylin and Emma have found that they're not big on wild hippy types up here, which is one reason those two are so happy to see us, I suspect. We don't fit the local image, so most people avoid us.

I drag the tandem bits down and hang round outside the post office putting it together. Talked to Haylin about organic farming and permaculture stuff, he's quite interesting and very knowledgeable. Hard for them up here, especially with Sage. Their farm is in Whittenoom, the asbestos mine, and there is no-one there under 30. It's relatively safe, most of the fluffy dangerous stuff knits into lumps and it's more a matter of not stirring it up. But the lack of kids means they bought the house here so Sage can go to kindy and school. Makes for a bit of a commute though. They also do WOOFing, and have interesting tales of the people that come through. Lots of bludgers, who expect guided tours but don't want to do much work.

Now talking to Kelly fairly often, good to talk outside the group plus I'm quite attached to Kelly. Too attached? I'm thinking about going back to Sydney instead of staying in Perth, even though I really didn't like Sydney that much. Good employment market though, pay is good. Kelly wants to WOOF for a few months at the start of next year, sounds like it might be fun. going to email each other, it's too expensive to talk.
